Hilary Hannam
In her role as the Chief Magistrate of the Northern Territory, Hilary consciously applies the principles of therapeutic jurisprudence - a concept that practices a closer and more personal interaction between magistrate and defendant than in traditional courts and treats the bail conditions or release conditions as a type of behavioural contract rather than a judicial order thus increasing the liklihood of greater compliance. This approach involves looking at laws, legal procedure and her own actions as having an impact on the emotional life and psychological well-being of those who are affected by the law. In other words, she uses the law as a social force that has consequences for the community, the victim, and the offender - a particularly challenging approach to take in a diverse and complex jurisdiction such as the Northern Territory.
